According to the findings of the first in-patient study, which was headed by researchers of Indian descent, a revolutionary dialysis equipment created for treating severe liver failure has been shown to be safe and effective.

Acute-on-chronic liver failure (ACLF) affects 30% of hospitalized cirrhotic patients, resulting in over one million deaths globally each year. Currently, the only viable treatment for this illness is liver transplantation, which is only offered to a small number of people.

When compared to patients receiving standard treatment, the novel DIALIVE device was shown to be safe and was linked with significant improvement in the severity of symptoms and organ function in a higher proportion of patients with ACLF. In the research, 32 patients were given DIALIVE or conventional treatment for up to five days, with results documented on days 10 and 28.

DIALIVE therapy was linked with a faster reversal of ACLF compared to standard of care, with ACLF resolving in nearly twice the number of patients.

Dr. Banwari Agarwal, Chief Investigator of the DIALIVE trial from the Royal Free Hospital, UK, stated that the intervention has the potential to transform the care provided to the ever-increasing number of ACLF patients.

He explained that the dialysis device has the potential to transform the therapeutic options available to clinicians across the world for patients with ACLF. He explained that the trials showed a marked improvement in biomarkers of systemic inflammation, such as cytokines, endothelial function, and markers of cell death.
